Energy, Resources, Infrastructure & Corporate (ERIC) (including Funds)

The Energy, Resources, Infrastructure & Corporate (ERIC) Team has one of Australia's largest dedicated energy and resources teams, with experience in all Australian jurisdictions.

The depth of our energy practice allows us to advise on all facets of the energy industry including regulation, major project development and mergers and acquisitions. We have been trusted advisors to some of Australia's, and the globe's, leading power and petroleum companies. Through Baker McKenzie's market-leading Renewables Group we also advise our clients on carbon offsets and trades, as well as clean energy projects.

The continuing need for energy and infrastructure assets to be replaced means investment is required on a global scale. Estimates by the International Energy Agency suggest there will be upwards of US$68 trillion invested in the world energy sector from 2015 to 2040. With traditional public funding avenues now insufficient, creativity and innovation is required to help realize the next generation of projects.

These large-scale schemes require cross-border experience and the ability to devise tailored solutions to both domestic and international challenges. Working seamlessly across 47 countries, we can help clients to structure, acquire, finance and implement projects, and manage their investments, whether in developed, developing or transition countries.

Building on our wealth of experience in this sector - we have been specializing in international energy, mining and infrastructure projects worldwide for more than 65 years – we understand the needs of both investors and financiers. Our transactional capability, coupled with our broad-ranging skills in finance, corporate, tax, and environmental and competition law, means we can deliver commercially effective solutions at every stage of the process.

Our Funds Transaction Group, which is a part of the global Funds group, also sits within the ERIC Team. Our Funds Transaction Group assists clients to undertake domestic and cross-border capital markets and M&A transactions. The Funds Transaction Group has a particular focus on the alternative private investment fund and REIT sectors, working closely with the Firm's private equity and real estate teams on private fund formation, complex M&A transactions, privatisations, take private transactions and structured investment transactions in those sectors.

Highly recommended by Chambers Global, our global Funds team (including the Funds Transaction Group) advises some of the most prominent sovereign wealth funds and pension funds on their investments in traditional fund structures as well as through bespoke arrangements such as managed accounts, joint ventures and co-investments. Our Australian lawyers collaborate with colleagues in key jurisdictions around the world, particularly the US, Luxembourg, UK, and Singapore to help clients meet all legislative, regulatory and fiscal requirements.

We advise clients on the licensing requirements and exemptions for offering funds and operating fund managers across 40 jurisdictions and have developed numerous publications and presentations on the implementation of new legislation. In Australia, the Funds Transaction Group advises clients on a range of matters relating to the funds management and financial services industries, including product development, regulatory compliance and corporate governance.
