Energy, Resources, Infrastructure & Corporate (ERIC)

The Energy, Resources, Infrastructure & Corporate Group has one of Australia's largest dedicated energy and resources teams, with experience in all Australian jurisdictions.

The depth of our energy practice allows us to advise on all facets of the energy industry including regulation, major project development and mergers and acquisitions. We have been trusted advisors to some of Australia's, and the globe's, leading power and petroleum companies. Through Baker McKenzie's market-leading Clean Energy & Renewables Group we also advise our clients on carbon offsets and trades, as well as clean energy projects.

The continuing need for energy and infrastructure assets to be replaced means investment is required on a global scale. Estimates by the International Energy Agency suggest there will be upwards of US$68 trillion invested in the world energy sector from 2015 to 2040. With traditional public funding avenues now insufficient, creativity and innovation is required to help realize the next generation of projects.

These large-scale schemes require cross-border experience and the ability to devise tailored solutions to both domestic and international challenges. Working seamlessly across 47 countries, we can help clients to structure, acquire, finance and implement projects, and manage their investments, whether in developed, developing or transition countries.

Building on our wealth of experience in this sector - we have been specializing in international energy, mining and infrastructure projects worldwide for more than 65 years – we understand the needs of both investors and financiers. Our transactional capability, coupled with our broad-ranging skills in finance, corporate, tax, and environmental and competition law, means we can deliver commercially effective solutions at every stage of the process.

Our Funds group also sits within this group. Our Funds Practice advises sponsors and investors on both private and public investment funds, covering a wide range of fund structures and asset classes, including private equity, real estate, energy, infrastructure, mezzanine, hedge funds, and regulated funds. From fund structuring to deal execution, we integrate tax and corporate advice, accounting for international tax complications, U.S. ERISA requirements, Investment Company Act rules, and securities laws and equivalent regimes in other jurisdictions.

Highly recommended by Chambers Global, our private equity team advises some of the most prominent sovereign wealth funds on their investments in traditional fund structures as well as through bespoke arrangements such as managed accounts, joint ventures and co-investments. Our lawyers collaborate with colleagues in key jurisdictions around the world, particularly the US, Luxembourg, UK, Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia to help clients meet all legislative, regulatory and fiscal requirements.

We advise clients on the licensing requirements and exemptions for offering funds and operating fund managers across 40 jurisdictions and have developed numerous publications and presentations on the implementation of new legislation such as the EU's Alternative Investment Fund Managers' Directive. Our services also include project management for fund formation, private equity deals, tax structuring, investor protection, regulatory and financial services, as well as advice on specific asset classes.
